The Tukilik Foundation seeks to strengthen our understanding of how the Inumariit   - the traditional Inuit - perceived their physical and metaphysical environment. Translated from the eastern dialect of Inuktitut, Tukilik means a meaningful thing , which is what the Foundation strives for in carrying out its research. The Tukilik Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization incorporated by letters patent on July 12,1995 under the Canada Corporations Act.

With a focus on gathering qualitative information, research is carried out primarily through personal contact with Inuit Elders, resulting in a rich and fascinating documentation of Inuit life and history. Despite operating with extremely limited resources, The Tukilik Foundation continuously gathers a wealth of info rmation about the landscape and human encounters, documenting the details through academic papers, publishing, photographs, displays and videos for future generations.

Its published findings are in demand for special presentations at public meetings and learned society meetings,  as well a wide range of universities in Canada, the United States and Europe. Most importantly information  The Foundation gathers is returned to the community from which it originated
